A coffeebreak roguelike with text adventure flavour. Made for 7DRL 2022.

In the forest beyond your farmlet lies a giant limestone chasm, ringed with caves and tunnels.

Many days and nights have passed since your father went into the chasm to vanquish a stone giant and prevent its evil from settling on the land. Now the last candle has burned down and he has not returned.

Can you save your father from the giant?

Instructions

It’s a turn-based roguelike, so keyboard commands should work as you expect. To get started, press q or / to open the help menu or look around using z or ? keys with arrow keys or vim keys to move and select tiles.

The game currently isn’t responsive or adaptive so plays best fullscreened on a 16:9 desktop display. Will probably not work on mobile.

Status

All story glyphs, terrain generators, inventory and combat mechanics were written from scratch during the week of the 7DRL.

I’ll keep note here of any further updates after the deadline, in case anyone wants to know. I’m hoping to do one or two final rounds of bugfixing and polish, then will feature freeze this version of the game as the final 7DRL inspired product.

I may decide to continue working on this further—adding more levels, more content and new mechanics—if so, I will link to the new version from here.

Post Jam Updates from Playtesting Feedback (Mon 14 March)

  • Fixed glitch in cave tiles where levels weren’t loading due to a typo in the hex colour values
  • Fixed bug in level generation to ensure spider caves work properly
  • Fixed bug with movement outside of map bounds not being checked in all situations
  • Added new weapons and armour with ‘barbarian’ and ‘warlike’ qualities
  • Cleaned up item glyphs and colours in farmlet
  • Added kobold sharpshooter perches on tiles adjacent to the chasm that are inaccessible to player movement
  • Kobolds no longer spawn in spider caves or upper levels

Playtesting and Feedback Fixes (Tue 15 March)

  • Fixed FOV glitch in overworld levels
  • Melee combat with ranged weapon equipped no longer deals NaN damage
  • Fixed several missing glyphs for items and weapons
  • Fixed bug in log where entity and player names were mixed up
  • Moved weapon drops from lower caves to mid caves
  • Statuary floor now uses dungeon flagstone tile rather than limestone cave tile
